Training

DW runs training sessions for community representative and construction workers so that they can learn and discuss about the need to strengthen houses and public facilities, and allow builders and carpenters to get practical and technical training about the ways that this strengthening is done on different types of building.

The workshops review the issues of typhoon damage prevention, the practical theories and methods that are suited to the locality, and participants actively contribute their own experience; practical work on local buildings then allow participants to work on different techniques. Each participant receives a technical handbook on cyclone resistant construction.

For many participants these workshops are the first time that they can discuss local building problems and disaster resistant construction issues with professionals. This is important, since each commune has its own styles and requirements and few buildings are actually the same. There has to be a combination of local knowledge and general disaster risk theory.

After the training course, evaluations have shown that the local builders are more confident about applying new techniques and sharing these with others. They are ready to promote the principles of storm prevention in housing construction inside or outside the target communes.
