Building and the Third World![]() |
In 1976, DW, based in Iran, mounted a 40 panel exhibition that was shown first in the Iran America Society in Tehran, then at UNCHS’s first global conference (Habitat I) in Vancouver, Canada, subsequently touring various north American cities. The exhibition and accompanying book outline a vision of development based on a respect for the indigenous which nearly thirty years on remains pertinent. This article was written by J. Norton, DW, after a review of the Grameen Bank housing loans programme for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which it was awarded in 1989. This example of loans to the poor for house building highlighted the idea of targeting the loan to make sure that houses are flood and storm resistant. DW’s current work in Viet Nam incorporates a similar idea . |
